Black Foxes

Status: Submissions Temporarily Paused

Sonya Othare and Cein Maegus are mages living in Freim, a country in the throes of an alternate industrial revolution that is hostile to magic. Cein is content with base survival as his health plummets and his lover is on the brink of engagement to a woman. Sonya strives to carve her niche in a country where mages are loathed and the only one she can trust is her best friend and hopeful love who has eyes for something more. When events turn sour, they are left with no one but each other and some unlikely friends. The consequences of their choices crash upon them in ways they never imagined, and they must risk losing everything to save themselves, hopeless loves, and a country on the brink of revolt.

I wrote the first draft of Black Foxes in a fevered two months and then spent over a year editing it. I don’t usually reread my novels when I’m not actively working on them, but Black Foxes brings me a shameless sort of joy that I hope will be infectious. It is an indulgent low fantasy novel that, angst and romance aside, is about creating unlikely friendships.
